The Power of Public Investment in Rural Arts: Waseca, MN

The Forum will host this preconference to share the impact of public funding for the arts in rural communities. We will take attendees to Waseca, MN, located 70 miles south of the Twin Cities, with just over 9,000 residents. Although a small farming community, Waseca has a vibrant small business scene and dedicated individuals in the arts. During our drive, we’ll explore the Legacy Amendment, Minnesota’s groundbreaking public investment in the arts that delivered over $57.26 million statewide in FY2024.

Upon arrival in Waseca, the tour will begin along Main Street with the history of the arts in Waseca and a self-guided exploration of public art and local boutiques. Following the stroll, participants will hear from a panel of rural arts advocates across the state of Minnesota, including a County Commissioner from Waseca County, a Regional Arts Council Director, and a leader of an arts non-profit in Hutchinson. The panelists will discuss the importance of public funding on the cultural and economic impact within their rural communities.

Organized by: The Forum of Regional Arts Councils

Expectations: This cultural tour will begin and end at the conference hotel and includes a 65+ mile bus ride from Saint Paul. Registration includes breakfast at the conference hotel and lunch & snacks on-site in Waseca

Cost: $225
